last moments of Carl Williams's life, sitting hunched over a cold, affixed metal prison table reading the paper, are captured clearly on closed-circuit television footage.Just before 1pm on Monday, one of two inmates with whom Williams associated in a day room of Barwon Prison's Acacia unit broke off the stem of an exercise bike, allegedly moved up behind Williams and delivered several fatal blows to the back of his head.Williams had many enemies. It was no secret people wanted the baby-faced killer dead, but nobody should have been able to get to him within the safest unit of Victoria's highest security prison.The attack was brutal and brief. Despite prison guards sitting behind a screen 10m away, supposedly monitoring the actions of Williams and his jailmates, it was 25 minutes before jail staff found the gangland serial killer, who had been dragged bleeding into his 4m x 3m cell.
